Car Won’t Start Randomly – Could It Be the Crankshaft Position Sensor?

Hey fellow members,

I drive a 2010 Nissan Altima. For the last few weeks, the car randomly won't start — I’ll turn the key and hear it crank, but it just doesn’t fire up. Then after a few minutes or tries, it suddenly starts as if nothing happened.

I scanned it with my Autel scanner, and once got a P0335 code – Crankshaft Position Sensor ‘A’ Circuit Malfunction, but it disappeared after I cleared it.

The battery is fine, starter sounds good, no security light issue.

Could a failing crankshaft position sensor cause this kind of random no-start?

I’d really appreciate if anyone has experienced this — before I go replacing sensors blindly.

Yes, 100%. A failing crankshaft position sensor often causes intermittent no-start issues — especially when hot. I’ve seen this many times on Nissans. It may not always throw a code right away either.

Had this exact issue on a 2011 Altima. I changed the crank sensor and it fixed the problem instantly. Took me 20 minutes and cost about $30. Symptoms were exactly like yours.
